Style never sleeps, my friends

Style never sleeps, my friends

Over the holidays I spent time with my extended family in Wisconsin. Although I missed the “polar vortex,” the nights were still colder than I was prepared for. Hence (and much to the chagrin of my husband) I resorted to wearing my down parka to bed.

I would like to say this was my first dalliance with inappropriate sleeping attire but alas I cannot. In fact I wear all sorts of “nontraditional” garments to bed with the hopes of staying warm throughout the night, even here in temperate California. These items typically include a range of polar fleeces and cashmere sweater sets. While this dressing method sends me to sleep, it also awakens me at night. The night I wore the parka to bed I got overheated and awoke as if I were suffering from an acute menopausal hot flash.

With the New Year I decided to make a sleepwear change for the sake of my style expert cred (style never sleeps, my friends), my marriage and my circadian rhythm. To that end, I have gone in search of sleepwear that is stylish, feminine and cozy. Here’s what fits the bill, from luxury to budget.

FD&D: Popping the crop?

FD&D: Popping the crop?

From cropped tops to pants to jackets, the cropped silhouette may be currently all the rage in regular-fit but it doesn’t translate well to maternity-fit.  Despite this, many high-profile pregos have been going cropped. While I applaud those glamorous mom-to-bes, such as Kerry Washington at the SAGs, for challenging convention with their fashion choices, nevertheless the look is rather unflattering. The cropped silhouette looks especially bad on a bumped body due to the horizontal styleline it produces. This styleline visually expands while it also shortens the body. Since pregos are already in “expansion mode”, clothes producing visual trickery of this nature are real fashion duen’ts.

These boots are made for dinning

These boots are made for dinning

It should really be no surprise to discover that most Marin women have at least seven pairs of boots in the wardrobe. Around here boots are ubiquitous. We wear them with everything and for every season. We have pairs for hiking, pairs for working and pairs for dancing. Our plethora of pairs got me thinking: What makes for an excellent pairing?

When it comes to food and wine, those in the know look for a complementary pairing. In fact, a complementary pairing is sought after with many things and, to my mind, even down to the style of boots you wear to local hangouts. It seems that most Marin women intuitively agree with me on this fashion matter. For example, you won’t find many local women wearing hiking boots at Ross’ upscale Marché Aux Fleurs nor donning patent leather stiletto-heeled boots at Fairfax’s mountain biker haven Gestalt Haus. We know that these boot styles, although appropriate at other hangouts, don’t fit the spirit of the aforementioned eateries.

To make a harmonious boot-hangout pairing the boots’ styling, spirit, material and boot shaft and heel heights should be considered. To that end, I have selected the newest boot looks from San Anselmo’s Junction Shoes (JunctionShoes.com) and paired them with complementary Marin eateries and hangouts.
